ABOUT US

For over 18 years, IMT has provided a free public programme of critical and innovative contemporary art exhibitions. We commission artists and invite independent curators to take risks and create unique audience experiences.

Previous exhibitions include: Light the lamp rarely, let the shadow come by Emma Tod; the five month online only exhibition commissioned during lockdown This is A Not-Me; Snow Crash curated by Kirsten Cooke that provided an alternative and queer infrastructure for staging collective practice; Trapped in a sticky shed with side chain compression by Benedict Drew, commissioned in collaboration with Forma; Wandering/WILDING: Blackness on the Internet, curated by Legacy Russell in homage to victims of police violence; Works from Survivor(F) by Suzanne Treister. All supported by the Arts Council England among others and reviewed in various journals, such as Art Monthly and Frieze… As well as the notably ambitious exhibition of 23 artists in Dead Fingers Talk – The Tape Experiments of William S Burroughs, curated by Mark Rohtmaa-Jackson as part of his doctoral research. In 2011, IMT became a hybrid being both non-for-profit and representing emerging to established artists with the aim to nurture meaningful relationships and develop careers. We represent: Ra Tack, David Burrows, Plastique Fantastique and Maggie Roberts. We actively provide platforms for underrepresented practices and a diverse range of critical research, which includes our published essays.

In 2005, after running an experimental space with fellow artists, Lindsay Friend and Mark Rohtmaa-Jackson teamed up to form IMT. Their mission was, and still is, to provide an independent space that could support artists through a programme determined by neither corporate or governmental agendas but what is deemed by the team as urgent in relation to the contemporary climate.
